What's the easiest way of connecting a laptop, a server and a desktop computer to the internet?

I already have cable broadband from virgin media connected to the desktop.

The server and the desktop do not have a wireless card.

Would it be easier (and cheaper) to get a wireless router and 2 wireless cards or is there a way of connecting the cable broadband to all three machines? What's the easiest way of connecting a laptop, a server and a desktop computer to the internet?
You could go wireless but it would be easier and cheaper in many cases to just use a router between the cable modem and your network. Most SOHO routers have at least 4 Ethernet ports on the LAN side and that would work fine for your needs. If you need more ports, just daisy-chain a switch with the appropriate number of ports to one of the Ethernet ports on the router and you're done.

Wireless is handy if you can't easily run wired Ethernet connections between machines, but wired generally performs better and is much more secure. What's the easiest way of connecting a laptop, a server and a desktop computer to the internet?
You're welcome.

How can you call a computer a server if it is not even connected to a router? If you connect the server directly to the desktop using a cable, how does one connect to the modem? Does one of them have two ethernet ports?

Get a wireless router. Plug the server and the desktop to the wireless router using ethernet cables. The laptop can remain wireless.

Alternatively, you may buy one or two external USB wireless adapters or wireless adapter PCI cards.
