As asked, this is a pretty open-ended question, and as such very hard to answer.
Does the server already exist?
What's the network operating system (NetWare, Windows, Linux, Mac/OS)?
Is the wiring infrastructure already in place?
Do all the computers have network cards?
Do you need services other than file %26amp; printer sharing set up, such as e-mail, proxy, database?
Do the computers need to have applications loaded on them?
Painting with a *very* broad brush, a competent network technician, setting the network up right, will take 5-10 hours to set up the server, and 1-1.5 hours per PC for setup %26amp; testing. Rates for network installs can run from $45-$125 per hour. How much would it cost to setup 10 desktop computers and 10 laptop computers to a server and network?
Specify software requirements, ETC. Be very exacting in hardware requirements. $6000.00 USD would be a sweet spot for the hardware.
Applications would jack up the cost. Research wise, just run searches on keyword 'workststions'. Contact OEM's after compiling an exacting list of system architecture. Fax the resulting compilation to OEM following compilation seeking cost and delivery data. Estimate capabilities of on-site IT department and select application packages based upon local capabilities. Project data archiving needs and backup software and power backup needs.
The list continues, but that will get you started.
