What exactly is a Terminal Server and how does it work?

First of all, I am not an IT person. Please keep in mind when responding.

We are trying to provide remote users with access to an application residing on our network. We use VPN for security purposes, but the application runs slowly when accessed remotely. Someone suggested that a Terminal Server might help with this problem. What exactly is a Terminal Server and how does it work?
Originally, a terminal server was intended to serve simple keyboard input %26amp; screen output more than the heavier data handled by current network pipes. The connected client was treated like an old-fashioned terminal and all processing was done by a virtual client on the server.

If your slowdown is caused by application/CPU overhead, the Terminal Server is not likely to help. If the slowdown is caused by pumping lots of data over slow links, it might.
