How to create a minecraft server just for two people?

I want to make a Minecraft town with just my friend so I guess I have to make my own server? I have no idea how to go about it and all the guides I've read make no sense to me.. like what on earth is port forwarding? Can anyone explain to me how to do this, in simple terms? Or should I give up? I have a PC, he has a Mac, either one of us can make the server. How to create a minecraft server just for two people?
port forwarding is going into your router and setting it up however having your own server usually costs money and if you want it to just be for you two then you just dont give out the IP address for it if you want however i may be able to get you guys onto mine all we do is build my email address is fitty61@yahoo.com ill talk to my admin although i doubt he will have a problem with it.... if you want me to talk to him just choose me as best answerHow to create a minecraft server just for two people?
under your server text file "you will have 2 of them" theres one that you can open with notepad and 1 you cant, for the one you cant right click and put open with notpad there will be some things you can change, it will say max players some where in the few lines of text it will say 20 if un changed. change the max players to 2 instead of 20 hopefully this helped

contact me or skype me or anything ill get your server runningHow to create a minecraft server just for two people?
Make sure you only give him/her the IP, and white list it if you think other people might find your server. It happened to my bro and I before, and the server quickly became more than just us, so he made two servers and left one open for us and one open for him and his friends.

What is one way to allow users from a web page to start a long running server process but get an immediate res?

What is one way to allow users from a web page to start a long running server process but get an immediate response back? (assume a J2EE environment)What is one way to allow users from a web page to start a long running server process but get an immediate res?
Hi,

One way to archive this from web, is to make a multitasking/multi-thread process.

So you give the user an immediate response, but the process keep processing until it ends.

You can then:

1) As the user to refresh the page or do it automatically (javascript)

2) Query an AJAX webservice each time to see if the process is done.

3) tell the user the system will send them an email.

In the second thread that you opened when the user request or initiate the process in the server, when the second thead is done, you should:

- send the email to the user let them know it is finished.

- or, just use a boolean in your storage system (can be filesystem or database) to mark the process as finished. You麓ll probably need a way to identity the process against the user that trigger the request in the first place.

If you are using the webservice option, (or the page refresh) , check out for this boolean.

Happy Web Coding,What is one way to allow users from a web page to start a long running server process but get an immediate res?
If you mean some method of letting them know that the process has started and is running then a status bar control is t he best way to do that.

How do I find Out what domains no longer resolve to my server?

Hi

I have my own server and I know full well some domains have either expired or moved and no longer resolve

How can I find out what domains on the server are redundent. Is there a script that does this

derekHow do I find Out what domains no longer resolve to my server?
No, since there's probably at least one address added every second of every day, no computer would be able to keep a list of every single address that's no longer working. (And some of them are only temporarily not resolving. When they come back online they'll start resolving again.)

If you're maintaining a DNS server, pruning is automatic - as addresses die they're pruned off, as addresses come online they're added.

How much would it cost to setup 10 desktop computers and 10 laptop computers to a server and network?

I need to have 10 Desktop and 10 Laptop computers all networked together and all hooked up to 1 server. Also (3) 24" monitors need to be hooked up to each desktop computer. I would like to know what I need for this project and what it would cost to get it done. It is for a small business just starting out.How much would it cost to setup 10 desktop computers and 10 laptop computers to a server and network?
As asked, this is a pretty open-ended question, and as such very hard to answer.

Does the server already exist?

What's the network operating system (NetWare, Windows, Linux, Mac/OS)?

Is the wiring infrastructure already in place?

Do all the computers have network cards?

Do you need services other than file %26amp; printer sharing set up, such as e-mail, proxy, database?

Do the computers need to have applications loaded on them?

Painting with a *very* broad brush, a competent network technician, setting the network up right, will take 5-10 hours to set up the server, and 1-1.5 hours per PC for setup %26amp; testing. Rates for network installs can run from $45-$125 per hour. How much would it cost to setup 10 desktop computers and 10 laptop computers to a server and network?
Specify software requirements, ETC. Be very exacting in hardware requirements. $6000.00 USD would be a sweet spot for the hardware.

Applications would jack up the cost. Research wise, just run searches on keyword 'workststions'. Contact OEM's after compiling an exacting list of system architecture. Fax the resulting compilation to OEM following compilation seeking cost and delivery data. Estimate capabilities of on-site IT department and select application packages based upon local capabilities. Project data archiving needs and backup software and power backup needs.

The list continues, but that will get you started.

I bought a new server for a network, there are 5 total computers on the network, i changed the work group on one computer now i cant log into that computer, i try the original password and it says invalid, i don't know what i am going wrong. I also cant get the new server to connect to the VPN, i tried putting in the IP address but it still wont connect, out Internet provider is SBC, any suggestions?I connected a new server to an existing Network now computer wont log in?
Contact your system administrator for help. It sounds like you have removed your computer from the domain and put it in a workgroup instead. As for the new server, it is most likely an issue with the network connection or with the username and password used.

    Good Evening,

I recommend Dfscape, it's a free private server, quick leveling, no lag, 24/7 uptime and no download client. Also, it has really helpful players and you can get 99's in a couple of days. The forums are good, giving real advice.

How to install Python library on web hosting server?

I need to use a Python library that is not available on my web hosting server. What is the probable procedure to get it to work? Put the necessary files in my cgi-bin? Ask the host to install it globally or only for me? Your help is greatly appreciated. How to install Python library on web hosting server?
Please talk to the Web host administrator to set up the Python interpreter for u :)How to install Python library on web hosting server?
So assumably you already have Python installed if you want to use a Python library.

I've asked my provider (Webfaction) in the past to install a Python library and they responded to just install it myself locally.

I think they are worried about introducing libraries with security flaws.

Is your Python library pure python? Then it is very to install because you just copy the files to your local server. If it has a C backing then you will need gcc to compile.

If you install the library in the folder where you import it then there's nothing more to do. Or if you install it elsewhere you need to add that folder to your Python path.

  • How do I get "mymovies" to connect to the server?

I installed the "mymovies" service on my computer but it is asking for a server. And I have no clue what the server is. Any help would be wonderful! How do I get "mymovies" to connect to the server?
Did you install My Movies Collection Management software on the client PC? (It needs to be on the server and on each Client PC.)

First share the folder on your server where your movies are stored. Second try to connect to your server from the client pc. Click run type \\yourservername\yourmovieshare and press enter. Does it bring up the share? does it ask for a user name and password? If it does you don't have them the same. If you connect ok then you have sharing set up ok. Also in the collection manager window when it askes for the server DO NOT add \\ to the server name. \\server = wrong. Just type server. Hope this helps.

Make sure the MM database folder is shared also.

    1) Factor in connection latency, bandwidth, and file size of the webpage (including images).

    2) 5-80K. Image intensive websites can poke into the megabytes.

    3) Divide your bandwidth by the size of your page.

Example%26gt; Your page size totals 250 KB. Change this to bits (250 *8 = 2000). One user will completely use 100% of bandwidth for one second.

What's the name of a reliable private server for World of Warcraft?

Any private server I go to for World of Warcraft absolutely sucks. The whole point of the game is to level up and gain new gear, but these private servers make it so that you immediately get everything that can be gotten, or so you start in a different place than where you are supposed to, and all that stuff. So, I just want a server where it is exactly the same as a regular Blizzard server, and where there is no custom modifications. What's the name of a reliable private server for World of Warcraft?

What are some minecraft mods that would be really be helpful when owning a server?

Just wanting to know what mods would be good to have on my server. I went into some servers to see how they ran. There is a mod where you can't touch what other people have made and what not. And I'm curious what mod let's the op's fly. Btw I have 1.8.1 Ty for your time. Oh and I am new to owning my server if that helps as wellWhat are some minecraft mods that would be really be helpful when owning a server?
Well there is a great number of modifications out there for minecraft. You could go to minecraftwiki.net and under the "Servers and Development" section you can fine mods there. I will link you to a mod site that I found and I heard some friends talk about some of these mods.

    The link is: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Mods#Mod_List_2

Under 4) Server Mods, there is a section 4.1 Mod list. Click on that and you can view the hundreds of mods that work with Minecraft... just make sure that the mod is compatible with the version of MC that you are running. My friends talked about using Bukkit as their new mod, although I do not know if it specifically supports op's fly.

My best advice would be to get yourself a World backup tool such as MC Backup Assistant

    (found here: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Programs_and_editors)

and install mods/programs to see what they do. If you do not like the effects of a mod/program, you can always reset the server and delete the mod. I hope this helps you out.

How many of you actually bought a cake server and toasting flutes for your wedding?

Iv seen a few people on here and they all seem to be buying the cake server/knife and toasting flutes and getting them engraved etc. My reception provides all this and i wont use it again so i didnt even think of buying it. Im just wondering how common it is to buy them and what your reasons for or against buying them are.How many of you actually bought a cake server and toasting flutes for your wedding?
Nope, it made no sense to. Used glassware from the hotel.
We didn't. What a waste. Then what do you do with them? Throw them in a drawer somewhere and never use it again. Don't bother. How many of you actually bought a cake server and toasting flutes for your wedding?
I didn't but my mother in law did buy toasting flutes for us as a present
i was married before.. searched all over for the right ones.. this time.. i've found them.. the flutes, but not sure of the servers.. we are having a little cheesecake, and then single serving cakes on the side. not really needed, might just bypass the special servers. (my ex.. i think he used mine later to change the oil in the car. lol i know he trashed them doing some such rot! lol )How many of you actually bought a cake server and toasting flutes for your wedding?
I had the drinking flutes given to me as an engagement gift. They weren't my style, but I used them anyways because the person who gave them to us was going to be at the wedding. We bought the cake server set from Wal-Mart because our site didn't provide anything and they were cute and not that expensive. I didn't get them engraved, and i ended up giving them away after the wedding.
We didn't buy them, but they were given to me as gifts at the bridal shower.
I bought them but I kept it cheap. I liked the idea of having them for memories and using them when and if I ever wanted to. I didn't want to put too much money into them because of that though. They were just kept for memory sake. I also though didn't get them engraved since they were the cheaper options.
I am, i brought a cake kinife not a server but just a nice knife i decorated and got engraved as well and also my MIL brought us these really nice flutes for us to use.

But what i am wanting to do is after the wedding take all of the stuff from the wedding like the knife, flutes, invites and menus, and also my boquet and put them all in a deep shadow box and make it like a little display and put it in my lounge room
I got a really nice cake server at Big Lots for about $5.00 (silver, engraved with a pretty scroll)

and my aunt gave us a set of toasting flukes.
Lots of people blow money. My sister had toasting flutes that were unremarkable. They used them every anniversary (divorced after 7 years, so into the trash they went).

We have 40 medieval goblets and tankards for my reception (yeah, some would fall into fairy/fantasy, but that's ok. The dragon ones are spectacular). It will look great! No, I didn't buy them special for the wedding. They are a combination of my collection, my sisters' collection and my soon-to-be SILs collection.

I see no reason to buy some specialized cake server. Just buy something at Kohls and add a ribbon to it if you don't have something already.
we got server/knife and the engravement for free when we registered at macy's. but they are useless now because we changed our wedding date!! but i wouldn't waste money on em!
I got a knife, had it engraved. I use it for special cake cutting occasions, like my children's b-days. It's not too fancy. I put a nice ribbon/bow on it for the wedding.
I bought both the cake server set and the toasting flutes. Both things are now sitting in a box in my parents' basement. I really think the cake server set was a waste but I loved my toasting flutes. They looked pretty in pictures.
Our bridal party gave us a gorgeous knife and cake server for our wedding day. They had it engraved and all. My parents gave us bride and groom champagne flutes which we used. We wouldn't have bothered buying our own. I think they are a beautiful keepsake though.
I bought my toasting glasses for $2 each at Garden Ridge. I planned to have them engraved but found out it would cost more to engrave them than what I paid for them so I didn't have it done. My cake knife and server were like $5. I bought them because I'm the sentimental type who would like to be able to pull them out at anniversaries or whenever I feel like it. If I had just rented, I wouldn't be able to do that. Also, my mom made my cake and we had to rent all our china so I would've had to pay for them anyway--they weren't provided.
I bought my own cake knife/server %26amp; champagne glasses. I had my champagne glasses engraved with our names, a heart symbol %26amp; our wedding date. I plan to use them again like at our 50th anniversary party.
The reason we did not buy that stuff is because I dont like keepsake or engraved items. Just not my style. Of course we have champagne flutes for parties at our home, but I dont get the point in buying two different ones. We just used what our venue had on hand.
We didn't buy them. Just more stuff to clutter up our home with, that we'll never use. I'm not particularly sentimental, if you couldn't tell.
Our flutes were gifted to us. We still enjoy drinking from them today - it's particularly special on our anniversary or Valentines Day. Register a set and perhaps you will get them as a shower gift.

    Cheers,

    Wendy

Almost any desktop or rackmount that Dell sells these days. A 1.8GHz single core CPU and 1GB of RAM would probably be enough - that's a very light use for a file and print server. 2GB of RAM would definitely be enough. Add 2 Ethernet cards (for redundancy - use 1, but you can switch to the other fast if the first one fails) and you're done. Don't let them sell you on a big box - you don't need it for that application. (Run it on Linux and your requirements go down, it's cheaper, it's much more solid and copying the files is just as easy.)

You could use IIS and use web sharing. Very basic answer, if you want detailed steps, just ask.
FTP Server? setup the FTP Service in IIS with a single account and give your users the login or you could do annonymous if your really not that concerned. How to access files over the internet to a Windows Server 2003?
Well if you have a server available, make it a FTP server and put their respective folders on them and make them password protected. Otherwise I s'pose you could make a remote connection, but then only one person can be on at a time. Very unreliable way of doing it. VPN works, but you said you did not want that.
Why not bypass the server completely and just assign a port per person and edit an .RDP file for the to remote directly to their machine from home? That is of course if they are using Windows XP Pro with network logons. How to access files over the internet to a Windows Server 2003?
For a start you need a fixed public IP address. Then forward the Windows network ports through the router to the server. They can access it by typing \\ followed by the address, and then log in. Once the login name and password is entered they will see their folders.

What is the difference between a server and a regular PC?

I need to buy a new server for my company. I went to the dell page to piece one together, but was dismayed to see the cost of one. Why is a server so much more money than a regular PC when the specs look about the same? - and sometimes the specs look even better on the PC!! Is there something more to it?

Is it safe to get a good PC for $2000 instead of spending $5000 on a server? What is the difference between a server and a regular PC?
It's true that you can buy a PC and install the server operating system on it and it will run fine. The big difference between hardware that is sold as a server and hardware that is sold as a PC is the level of quality of the components and the level of support that Dell will give you.

In my role as Network Admin at several companies we have used PCs and Servers to run server software, but only use a PC as a server if it's going to be used for testing or as a redundant server for the "real" server. If you are going to be using the equipment as the only server your company has, I definately recommend you get the real server hardware - it will pay off in the long run.

The hardware components in a server have gone through much more testing for reliability. One other big benefit of purchasing true server hardware from Dell is that they will give you LIFETIME phone support for any questions you have, even if your warranty has expired. For example, if you are having problems upgrading the operating system and getting drivers, the Dell server team will talk to you and help you out, regardless of whether or not your warranty has expired. I have confirmed this with Dell several times when calling them about servers that were out of warranty.

Bottom line: If you need a primary, business-critical server, get a real server. If it's a redundant or for-testing system, get a PC and use it as the server, installing the Windows Server operating system on it.
    Hi

Yes there is a difference between a commercial server and a small business or home server. A server can be made from an old computer such as an old 486 ect,. How ever I would recommend a much later computer. You can purchase a computer for around $500.00 that will serve you well if your using it as a server for a small business or home server. In fact if you have a computer that is set up good you can use that. If the computer you have has say at least a 2.0 gig CPU, and you have at least 512k of memory and as I said the server is not going to have high volume (Traffic) all at one time your all set. I am sending this message on a server that has a CPU running at 2.56 gig and it has 512k of memory. I host 26 web sites and it has never been taxed. I have built and run 5 server's in all.

I hope this helps but please feel free to ask me more questions, and should you decide to buy a server or run a serve as I have described above let me know and I will guide you through the entire set up. Should you reply on this message also let me know if you are running DSL, Cable, etc and if you IP is static or dynamic.

Good luck and I hope this helped. What is the difference between a server and a regular PC?
Any PC can act as a server, but a server for a company should have better quality components. And depending on your needs, often hot-swap drives and power supplies, etc. to reduce downtime.

You should talk to a Dell representative and see what you actually get for the extra money, then decide whether your business needs that enough to spend the extra money (The answer is probably yes, you don't want your business to suffer from the wrong decision).
A big difference between a server and a regular PC is the I/O capability. A server may have faster hard drives with more storage capacities. It may have redundant storage devices for high availability and reliability. The motherboard design is different with faster buses, so on. On the other hand, a server usually doesn't need a top-of-the-line video card or a big screen monitor.

You need to figure out what kind of server you need. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server, there are at least 6-7 different kinds. Unless it's really heavy duty, I guess a decent PC would do the job fairly well. What is the difference between a server and a regular PC?
-Hot-swappable CPU's and Hard Drive (this one is a biggy)

    - Servers are more reliable : better hardware. "First choice" for processors, memory, chipset.

    - Good quality /certified drivers.

    - No "exotic" peripherals.

    - Servers have large case, large fans ( 2 or 3) : good ventilation.

    - Servers use generally ram with parity or ECC modules. Memory error are detected.

    - SCSI controller / scsi disk : better performances, better quality (disk).

    - hot plug / raid 1 or 5 possible

    - better power supply : 350/400w ( 1-2 seconds without power (220v or 110v) possible

    - you can buy service contract ( Compaq Carepaq for example - 4 hours intervention )

    - diagnostics program

    - thermal sonde.

    - large memory support

    - 8 PCI connectors.

    - homogeneous and tested configuration
Server is a pc which can support muliples aplpication running at one time whithout any trouble server can handle multiple simultaneous connection whereas pc cant
Servers are designed to run 24/7. The components in a server can usually handle higher stress.

I think your company needs to hire a new person to choose their computer equipment.

What is wrong the Yahoo Pop Mail and Where is the official Yahoo pop server status?

Yahoo Pop Mail stopped working. No changes had been made to the computer.

There clearly is a problem with Yahoo, as many others have noticed also.

So, where the f$#k is the official Yahoo pop server status page?

It seems impossible to get any answers out of Yahoo. They've screwed up again. What is wrong the Yahoo Pop Mail and Where is the official Yahoo pop server status?
The strange thing is I continue to be able to download my mail onto my mobile (iphone 4) but cannot download any pop email on my computer. What is wrong the Yahoo Pop Mail and Where is the official Yahoo pop server status?
Nope they didn't f$#k up. They are just charging for something that used to be free. If I were you I would just use one of the many mail services that don't charge you to set up pop mail. Even though I've had this email account for years, that's what I'm gonna do. Telling all my friends to do it to.

WHat do you think of people who work for tips as a Server/Bartender? How well do you tip?

I have worked at a restaurant for 8 years. I started off as a server and now I am a Bartender. I have some college completed but I make about 600.00 a week in tips. Average work week is 45 hours. Alot of people dont realize this, but we work extremely hard to make our tips. And contrary to popular belief most people can not handle the enviroment. Sometimes I think people think "shes just a server" "a nobody". What do you think of servers/bartenders and how do you feel about tipping?WHat do you think of people who work for tips as a Server/Bartender? How well do you tip?
I generally tip 10-15%, but, if the service was very good, I tip up to 25% . Attitude determines altitude. I once saw a sign on a Dive boat while on a Scuba diving trip to Grand Cayman Island..."A TIP IS A REWARD FOR GOOD SERVICE" Says it all, doesn't it?
A lot of good answers. One thing that bothers me lately, though - some restaurants are going to the European "service compris" model and adding the tip to the bill, but won't have signs posted or a note on the menu. It does protect servers, but the customer should be informed as well.

WHat do you think of people who work for tips as a Server/Bartender? How well do you tip?
I consider myself a good tipper because I was a waitress about 6 years ago and I know that the server's salary is not good at all.

Some people don't realize that and some people think that they are not obligated to leave a tip because the server will get “rich” with all that “free money” he/she gets from “just doing his/her job”.

My salary at that time was $2 and hour, and it was so frustrating when I did my best and I gave a really good service and I received a $2 tip on a table that spent over $50. That was not fair!!!!

I always tip 20% of the total bill if I get a great service, 15% if the service is just ok. But if my server is rude to me or he/she gives me a poor service I usually talk to the manager and I let them know why I am not satisfied and why I’m not leaving a tip. However, if the restaurant if very crowded and the waitress is really busy but still doing her best or if the problems is in the kitchen, I’ll leave a good tip anyway because it’s not the server’s fault.
I think everyone should wait tables at least once in their life. It's not an easy job. You have to be able to read people without even knowing them the moment that sit in that chair or bar stool. Are they having a good day or a bad day, did they just get in a fight with their spouse before sitting down. You smile while they abuse you and put up with their condescending ways. On the up side, my husband and I have made a very lucrative living from the business. You meet more nice people than a**holes, but it's not for everyone. We are both professinal waiters, and tip anywhere from 25% to 50%.WHat do you think of people who work for tips as a Server/Bartender? How well do you tip?
Im a server and when i go out to eat i always tip very well because i know how it is to be stiffed. if im by my self and i spend like 15 bucks ill tip like 7 thats almost 50%
I always tip, no matter what - I used to be a Bartender...

That being said, if a server/bartender is VERY bad/rude, I will tip them 10%. I normally tip about 25%-30% for really good service.
I think that tipping should never be mandatory. That said, I also believe that servers %26amp; bartenders should be paid at least minimum wage. Forcing you to rely on the "kindness" of patrons is not a good thing to do.

As to tipping, I tip 15-20% based on service. I should say that I tip 0-20% because if the service is lousy, I won't leave a tip. In general though, it is the former.
Tipping has been going on for a long time and when you work in that environment it is part of what you earn. it does not matter what your job is if you do it well and expect to be respected for doing it.

I try to tip but if I have to tell a server to do the job they are expected to do I dont tip them. I am very picky about how anyone does there job and yes serving is a tough job and many who do it may not be good at it. Sometimes my tip to them would be to find something else to do. I also think the wage they are paid is nuts, it shold be more.
I always tip regardless of service. Excellent service 20-25%, good service 15%, bad service 10%. And no servers are not nobody's. Everyone has feelings, it is hard to come to a job and put on a smile when your depressed, and that is probably the hardest thing about being in the service industry, you always have to pretend your happy.
i would tip the waiter about 5 bucks because the poor ladd/laddy is working hard and is probably not getting paid enough. But i feel sry if someone says no tip and tells them to buzz off. Thats mean!

There are two Good ways to do it:

    1. Using Import %26amp; Export wizard, you can transfer the entire database from one server to another.

    2. Simply FTP the data file (.MDF) and then attach the file using the sp_attach_db command. What is the easiest way to copy an sql 2000 server database from one webserver to another?

use the replicaton service or unmount the database, do a copy (ftp if needed) and a remount.
You can use SQL Server's Utility to Export Data to another SQL Server or an alternative is that you can take backup of your database from one server and restore it at another one!

  • What percentage do you think is appropriate to tip a server?

Assuming the server did a good job, what does everyone think is an appropriate tip? 10%? 15%? 20%? 25%? As a server, I am just curious as to finding out what some people are thinking when they go out to eat, get great service, and then leave a crappy tip. Please explain why this happens.|||I'm a server too, Kelly. I can't explain why this happens. But when I go out to eat, I never even consider the total amount of the check. I consider the service given and tip accordingly, as my wallet will allow. I have been known to leave a $5 tip for coffee. And to leave a penny for a $50 dinner. Totally depends on service given.

Many people do not realize how much tips mean to servers. Most are paid backward minimum wage - $2.13 an hour, and you have to claim tips to make it up to the minimum wage. If you don't make those tips, tough. You still have to claim them. If I am in a restaurant, and don't have the cash on me to leave the tip I want to, I will stop the server and explain. And will go back at a later date and make it up to him or her.

Many people consider leaving $1 on the table as fine. It probably was in 1950 or so. Others simply don't think.

The only way I know to solve this problem is to make it mandantory for everyone to work one week as a server, and see what kind of crap we have to put up with, usually from those who either don't tip at all, or very little. It has been my experience that most people tip something. But there are those that don't. And won't. Don't believe in it. For whatever reason.

I have always gone into work with the attitude that all my tips are earned, not deserved. And wait on people accordingly.

As for other people leaving very small tips... they're rude. They'll dock you on whatever they see as "not fitting of a waiter/waitress". Or they're cheap and didn't bring enough money.|||its up to you to tip? but 15% 20% is more than enough|||Depends on the service. If just ok 10% will do. But If I have a great meal experience, I've left 25%. Most times it is around 15%|||double the tax in calif, rounded down. smaller tips is because people are fed up with the high price of things. in addition, it's the proprietor's responsibility to pay the wages and figure out how to stay in business, ie dealing with competition.|||I use as a baseline 20% I have gone as high as 100% it depends on service. I cannot understand why someone who has great service would not leave or leave a crappy tip|||15% if you just do your job. I don't need smiles and small talk. 20% if they are just a ball of fire. I work for tips and I believe in tipping so there are times I will leave 50, 60, or 100%. I never leave anything smaller than a $5 unless it's for a cup of coffee.

What do you consider to be an overwhelming amount of tables to handle at once for a server?

Im a new server and so far I am doing fine but thats because it is slower than usual this time of year. What amount of tables do you have to be able to handle to show that you are truly a good server or experienced? What do you consider to be an overwhelming amount of tables to handle at once for a server?
About 6 tables of four would be quite a busy task. But it does depend on the type of establishment and the type of service offered by it.

How much of web development happens on the server or by the host?

I am wanting to get beyond simply writing html code and designing nice looking pages and I want to learn more abotu content rich, dynamic, database driven websites.

I have heard that if you want to have dynamic material on your site a lot of it depends on your host and your hosts server. Like if you want to run cold fusion programming that your server must support it. Or if you want to use perl, php, server sife includes.

I don't even know what much of that really means. This is what I want to learn about.

Specifically, I want to know right now how much of dynamic content is actually dependent on the host.

I would like to use sql for my database as that is what I have edited in the past. Does my host and server need to know this? Do they need to do anything for this to work and will they charge extra? How much of web development happens on the server or by the host?
First of all, what happens with a normal web page is the user's browser sends in a web address, the web server sends back a static text file called "whatever.html" and the browser interprets and displays it.

With a dynamic web page, the browser sends the name of a data file (whatever.php, whatever.perl, whatever.asp, etc.), often with parameters attached (form data and hidden fields). The server sends that to the proper program, which processes the data (accessing databases or other files on the server as necessary) and sends back a text file in html format, which the browser then displays.

That is, all the work is being done on the server. (By the way, a "Web Host" is just a name for a "Web Server" which you are leasing space on.)

You need your site hosted on a server which supports the programming language and database you're going to use. Each of these are software which has to be installed on the server, so there may be a charge (or it may be included as features in the bundle you pay for. Perl is often included, for example.)

Basically, if you're using PHP or Perl you want a Linux/Unix server, if you're using ASP, you want a Windows based server.

The database program you use also has to be installed on the server. On a Linux system, MySQL is probably the most common, and it works nicely with PHP and Perl. I'm not sure what is used on Windows servers beyond Access (which is OK for small applications) and MS SQL Server, both of which (like anything Microsoft) will cost. Cold Fusion is expensive as well, though there's a free version you can install locally for development.

SQL is the query language used by every major database system (from Access to Oracle), so that's not going to affect your choice much.

If you're really low-budget, it's possible to do up a simple dynamic website using Perl as the language and keeping your data in tab-delimited text files. I've done this, but it's tedious and I don't recommend it for a sizeable project. How much of web development happens on the server or by the host?
When it comes to server-side includes, that's what it means - the server must process the content you want to include.

Dynamic sites like you describe are generated by the hosting server and is totally dependent on the host server having the backend needed to provide the dynamic content. The host company might simply provide a web server and a database backend. Some might provide an application framework. Others might even provide an entire content management system where you only have to tweak the look and add the information.

The last link below gives a decent idea on what one hosting company provides. I am not affiliated in any way with that company, it is linked for information only.

Good luck! How much of web development happens on the server or by the host?

What is the equivalent on xampp server?

    Hi Jason,

You asked this question twice...and I previously answered it here:

The "public_html" folder is located at:

    C:\xampp\htdocs\

    Best regards,

subexpressionWhat is the equivalent on xampp server?
inside the XAMPP folder look for a file called httpd.conf. Open it up with a text editor like Notepad or Wordpad (prefferably Notepad) and look for the line that defines "DOcument Root". The path on that line is the equivalent of public_html on your computer. You can also change it and set it to whatever folder you're more comfortable with (just make sure that path is found in two places in that file, you will need to change both and then restart XAMPP)

How can I make excellent tips as server?

I just started serving in this restaurant that I formerly hosted at. One of the first tables I took told me I had a "pleasant demeanor". So, I suppose that's a good start. I'm very sweet and I always smile at my customers. So basically what I am asking is, what qualities do you look for in a server that would earn them a great tip?How can I make excellent tips as server?
    Hum...pay attention to details...

You accidentally posted this question under the "Programming and Design" category. People here answer questions about computer programming and user interface design.

So...you sort of missed an important detail here when you posted a question...You probably could have picked a better category for posting this question.

But..don't sweat it..it's a common mistake here, and we weren't going to tip you anyway :-)

But as a server...you have to pay attention to little details like that.

When I eat out, I start with the 15% rule. But I definitely go higher or lower based on the service. And the service is all about the details:

    * If you serve me food, and I have no knife or fork, please don't make me ask for them. Notice that detail and fix it for me.

    * If you walk by and my drink is almost empty, ask if I want another (even if it's just water).

    * Don't ask me if everything is OK every 3 minutes. If things aren't OK, you should be able to see that by paying attention to details...

    * KEEP TRACK OF TIME!!! This is my biggest pet-peeve. Know when I should be done and come around for the check. If I'm not done yet, guess when I will be and come back...soon.

I've had this happen to me a lot lately. It's annoying and yes, it does influence the tip: I have a great meal with good service. Then we're ready to leave. And we sit there and wait for the check. And wait. And wait. And then you get the check and put out the credit card and wait again..and wait...and wait. I am MUCH less forgiving of that than I am of having to wait for the order to be taken, or the food to be done. When it's time to go....it's time to go.

    Just my opinion.

What is the best way to set up your own server?

I want to create my own web server from home. My question is where is the best place to start. I have a good internet connection (100mbps) and three laptops, one of which is constantly connected to the internet. I have a domain name registered already, and would simply like to know how to upload files to it on my own server. Any sort of resource or advice would be appreciated. What is the best way to set up your own server?
mysqlWhat is the best way to set up your own server?
You wouldn't upload files to a server locally. You would copy them over.

It depends on your operating system, whether you're using windows or unix. You can download apache for windows - do a search for xampp on google, download and follow the instructions. What is the best way to set up your own server?
Oh dear god do -not- use XAMPP for a server that you plan to
make accessible to the general public. Even they clearly state on
their website that XAMPP is not meant for live servers, it's
meant as a local web server environment. Unless you're looking
to put a huge neon sign above your house saying: "Please
hack my serverbox's crappy security and reap havoc on my
    entire network".

Read up on Apache if you're trying to create a web server and
follow their steps carefully when setting it up. Their website is
a great resource for getting started.

How to configure outlook in a system in a network connected to a server system ?

    Hi all,

How can i configure outlook in a system in a network connected to a server system, internet is only provide in that server system. So what will be the incoming and outgoing servers i have o set in the network system.

Plz help meHow to configure outlook in a system in a network connected to a server system ?
Internet wont be a problem to get since you can direct your computer to use the shared server as the default gateway or proxy. But as your e-mail you should highlight if its private mail or yahoo/live,gmail. Its easy with the last three mail sources because there are instructions on google for setting them up with Outlook. So as for private mail you should ask the mail service provider for details or the person who configured your server. How to configure outlook in a system in a network connected to a server system ?
If it's a server system then amongst the servers should be an MS Exchange server. You will need to have an account on the Exchange server and when you set up your account on Outlook (not Outlook Express) you'll need your user name as well as the Exchange server name to fill in the details. There's a setup wizard on the Outlook Tools menu (Tools%26gt;Accounts%26gt;Add).

  • How do you determine the best Linux server distro is for a company? Or are they all mostly the same?

I'm a networking student, and I have you deside what Server OS is the best. Although, I am unsure what to look for expectly when it comes to linux. Any pointers? How do you determine the best Linux server distro is for a company? Or are they all mostly the same?
It depends entirely on what the server is expected to do.

If you are looking for a stable and secure platform for services that are to be exposed to the internet you may choose one platform, if you are looking for something that easily integrates with a windows environment and has lots of pretty widgets for administration you may choose another.

A great deal of it comes down to the personal taste of the administrator, what type of package management system (RPM, Deb, Pkg, etc) he prefers, and what type of start up scripts\directory structures he's confortable with.

Ultimately most of the major linux distributions have something unique and desirable to offer (otherwise they wouldn't be around for too long).

One other thing that may influence the decision is the need for commercial applications, you are more likely to use one of the "big box" flavors if you need Oracle or other business software support.

Finally, it depends on the size of the support staff at the company in question and how heavily they will need to lean on the support (or lack thereof) provided by the software distributor. How do you determine the best Linux server distro is for a company? Or are they all mostly the same?
Servers need stability. Debian and Slackware are slightly behind the edge distros, but reportedly very, very stable. They are slow to incorporate software upgrades, but servers don't need the latest and greatest, they need stability and security. How do you determine the best Linux server distro is for a company? Or are they all mostly the same?
if this is for a company you have little choice other than redhat. all other distros are fun for home users but offer no business support.

Be careful as this has nearly bankrupted many companies.

What is a good site to get past proxy blockers on my school server?

I need a good site to get on myspace from my school server. The school blocks all proxy, social networking and gaming sites and the original proxy I was using is now deactivated. What is a good site to get past proxy blockers on my school server?
I always get a good laugh at you kids coming here asking for ways to bypass school internet site filters. You never learn. you should be putting all those efforts into learning instead of trying to get ways pass school site filters.
    Hi,

I usually go to this site http://proxyinter.net/ for their latest up to date proxy list of anonymous proxy servers on the internet. The proxies on their list is guaranteed to be alive and still working because they check and update it regularly, so you are assured you have a working proxy list at your disposal and use it whenever you want.

Hope this info helps in some way. What is a good site to get past proxy blockers on my school server?
Alright im just gona say it straight up. go up to the tool bar and go to tools.go down to internet options.alright the little window will op up and from the the top tabs go to connections. click the button down by LAN and it will say LAN settings.go into that and where it says proxy at the bottom of the little window.click the check box under where it says use proxy server.Where it says Address type in 81.18.116.70. and for port type 8080.now if you care it wil say that the computer is in Russia but that wont matter (you will get the occasional russian lettering but u can use google to translate it.)so when you get everything done with click ok on both the boxes and exit out of the browser.then open back up and go to YouTube and and boom there you go.(it might be a little slow but its worth being on whatever you want to be at school.)

Now if your school got smarter adn blocked the top bar where it says file edit view and bla bla. so then go to start then control panel then in there somewhere will be "Internet Options" and do the same stated above.

Its Russian because its the best free server that i can find.

Theoretically, if it was a good site to do that with, your school server will block it. keep trying though. It is never impossible to get a computer to do something it should'nt do, but sometimes it can be very challanging

The ability to access Yahoo! Mail using an email reader program such as Outlook, Eudora, or Thunderbird is only available to customers of our premium Yahoo! Mail Plus service. To determine whether you have purchased this service, please visit the My Services page.

See Yahoo! Mail Plus for information about subscribing.

We’ve assembled the following instructions for configuring Yahoo! Mail Plus to work with many common email readers:

Use these settings to access Yahoo! Mail Plus using your favorite email reader.

Note: If you can't add new POP or new SMTP servers in your mail reader program, you need to change your current mail settings to access your Yahoo! Mail Plus account. Write down your current settings first—you may need to revert to them later if you want to use the same program to send and receive messages from your other email addresses.

    Incoming mail server settings

    POP server: plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com

    Use SSL

    Port: 995

    Outgoing mail server (SMTP) settings

    SMTP server: plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com

    Use SSL

    Port: 465

    Use authentication

Account Name/Login Name: Your Yahoo! Mail ID (your email address without the "@yahoo.com", for example, “testing80”)

Email Address: Your Yahoo! Mail address (for example, testing80@yahoo.com)

    Password: Your Yahoo! Mail password

    Troubleshooting tips

If you still can’t send Yahoo! Mail from your mail program, you may be accessing the Internet through an ISP that is blocking the SMTP port. If this is the case, try setting the SMTP port number to 587 when sending email via Yahoo!'s SMTP server.

Your email program gives you the option of either deleting your Yahoo! messages from the Yahoo! server after downloading them into your mail reader, or leaving them on the Yahoo! server so you can see them online in your Yahoo! account, too. What is the answer to the server info when trying to send email through outlook?

Behind the bar. That is how I learned. Just pay attention to the drink recipes!
See if you can be an "apprentice" or shadow with a professional bartender. For example, bartenders may be hired for private parties. Ask someone if they are willing to let you shadow them.

What is the difference between a server network and a P2P network?

What is the difference between a server network and a P2P network? What is the difference between a server network and a P2P network?
Lets say this is about illegal downloads (lets face it, P2P is usually about illegal downloads)

If you use my server network, then the illegal file gets uploaded to my server and people go to my server to download it.

If you use my P2P server, then my server only keeps track of who has the illegal downloads. People come to my server to get the information to connect and download it directly from other users. The illegal software is never on the server. Supposedly (for now) considered a "safer" way of doing it and not get caught. But of course the programs you are getting are off of anyones computer so they arent very safeWhat is the difference between a server network and a P2P network?
A server network has a central machine or at least a group of central machines that run the network. These central machines are contacted by any machine that wants to participate in the network, and the central machines provide any services to the network such as file sharing or communication. If the central machines aren't running, the network is down.

A P2P (Peer to Peer) network has every machine in the network as equal to all others - there's no central machine running things. Any machine could share files, or provide a communications link, or any other network service. The advantage is that such a network still runs as long as any machines involved with the network are still running, it's extremely resilient. The disadvantage is that it tends to be horribly inefficient compared to a server network, since so many network services are run by every machine on the network instead of by centralized high-performance machines. What is the difference between a server network and a P2P network?
Client server model tends to have certain computers offer services (server) and client computers using these servers for various tasks.

In a P2P model any computer can act as a server or client at any given time.

What is the difference between a server based operating system like OS X and Windows?

How is OS X a server based operating system and Widows is not?

Cheers! What is the difference between a server based operating system like OS X and Windows?
There are basically two types of operating system - desktop orient(at)ed and server orient(at)ed. The server orient(at)ed versions offer workgroup management and administration software tools that provide simplified access to common network services, including a mail transfer agent, a Samba server, an LDAP server, a domain name server, and others.

You can get a desktop edition or server edition of Windows (sorry - had to laugh at your typo "Widows") but since most people only need a desktop version and it is pre-installed on most PC's, you have to buy it. Most server versions of Windows are bought for just that - to run on a server.

Sites like that are blocked at schools and at work places for a reason- because you are supposed to use the computers for WORK! I wouldn't go looking for a way to crack it. It can only lead to trouble.
I recommended one web proxy, use this these to open some blocked site

What do you suggest as a server host for a small internet based business?

I am starting a business that will rely soley on the website for everything. What is an extremely reliable server host that I can count on that is COST EFFECTIVE? Thanks!!What do you suggest as a server host for a small internet based business?
The two that spring to mind immediately are GoDaddy.com and AliBaba.com, the first one is known for its infamous, and therefore effective television ads. And the second one has excellent global coverage. Google also has some access to such as well. Ebay and Amazon also serve for them as well, I use AliBaba myself.
Any small web host company will do. You can get a good service for less than 100$/year!

The ONLY important thing is to choose your "system": in NO circumstances use a Window based server: it is Microsoft, and will cost you licence fees (and bugs, and slow speed and annoyances, and cryptic languages).

Make sure you select a LAMP server: Linux/unix, Apache, MySQL, Perl/php.

Most hosts offer both LAMP and WAMP (the window server).

Go for a hosting company that is not TOO big! The biggests (godaddy etc) all have a very poor service (too many clients). As a starter, you want to get some attention and help from your hosting company.

Good luck! What do you suggest as a server host for a small internet based business?

What is the difference between a server based operating system like OS X and Windows?

How is OS X a server based operating system and Widows is not?

    Cheers!

What is the difference between a server based operating system like OS X and Windows?
Windows has server titles, imaginatively called "Windows Server 2000, 2003, 2008" with different versions. The primary differences are in the capability of those server versions to perform a few very important tasks. For example, a Windows XP machine cannot act as a DNS, DHCP or Active Directory server, but Windows Server can perform all of those functions. I would imagine that OS X is server based in that it provides some of these functions that you normally would not find on a client version operating system.

That is just a small example, as there are vast differences in the capabilities of the server operating systems versus the client version operating systems (XP, Vista, etc.).

From all the one's I've played, the one which seems like the one you are looking for is Instinct PK. It is really the most fun and well coded server, it's active and the community is mature.
