My class is building a website and we have not yet purchased a server to run the website. What type of server would we need to run an average website? What type of Server is needed to run a standard website?
You can put a website on a desktop computer, it just needs to have the hardware resources to be able to handle the site so if it's a class/student project then you may not have to worry about redundancy or failover since uptime may not be that critical i.e. if it's class project and the site goes down you can troubleshoot it without affecting incoming revenue. 2. how many people will be accessing it? a handful, hundreds, thousands? if it's going to be alot of people then you may want to get a server with around 8 GB's of RAM. if it's a small number then just get 2 - 4 GB's. hope this helps to guage your decision. What type of Server is needed to run a standard website?
If the site is just HTML you don't need any type of server. You can just click on it and run the site in a web browser. If the site has PHP and SQL in it you will need to run a local server or buy a cheap server for around $400What type of Server is needed to run a standard website?
You can run the Apache web server on a regular computer for that. Follow instructions you can find by Google'ing Apache
