I'm only asking this because i got hired as a Server today, and i've never been one before. I'm excited but nervous at the same time. So if you've ever worked as a server or if you are a server, can you tell me what it's like and can you give me some tips on how to be a good server? What is it like working as a server in a restaurant?
I loved waitressing! Its not hard at all. If your a people person, it a great job to have. Its fast money too! Your constanlty meeting new people, but you also get to build relationships with the "regulars". The worst thing that could happen is you get a rude customer once in a while, but you have to learn how to be polite and stay calm. The last thing you want to do is curse out a customer and lose your job over it(been there, done that). This being your first job, you will have to deal with a rude customer one day, so just be polite and understanding, and try to please them the best of your ability. If they are still not satisfied, then justapologizee( yesapologizee even if you did nothing wrong)and let your manager know, and them handle the customer. Smile, look your best(no one wants to be serve by someone that looks like theydon'tt care about themselves)compliment your customers(borderline flirting) and have fun! Good luck!!What is it like working as a server in a restaurant?
I've been a server off and on since 1996. All I can say is wear sturdy non-slip well-cushioned shoes and socks, you'll be on your feet a lot. Even when the restaurant isn't busy, stay busy by cleaning or restocking things. There's an old adage that says "If you've got time to be leaning, you've got time to be cleaning."
As far as being a good server, what I always told my new waitresses was to think about how you want to be treated when you go to a restaurant. They get you drinks and appetizers, take your order, offer you specials, clear your plates, get you a to-go box for leftovers, things like that to start with. And it's also part acting. Paste a smile on your face and stay nice even when you'd like to throttle all the people at table #101.
And observe a lot, keep your eyes and ears open as to how the best servers seem to do things. And if you hit a lull when all your tables are eating, quietly pass through the dining room with the coffee pot and pitcher of water while looking at glasses and cups. Nobody likes an empty glass or cup unless they've told you they don't want any more.
Good luck, and it really does come pretty easily once you know the POS system and where everything is. And SMILE!What is it like working as a server in a restaurant?
Smile, smile, smile. Follow the customer's lead when it comes to serving them, some people like to be left alone, and some people like to be catered to, try to read your customers to see which one they want. Ask if you forget an order, don't try to guess!
Its hell.
Don't drop your tray.
