What is a proxy server and what are some UK proxy servers?

I want to watch shows on the BBC and ITV on the internet. Unfortunately I am in America and I can't get access to British things. How do I use a proxy server??- I've never used one ever- and please list some Free reputable websites.

I suggest you to try with the British ( UK) proxy if the site is restricted from outside UK.

I have seen today that http://www.proxyblind.org has posted latest proxy server from USA, UK etc...
